And now they plan to restore the swimming pool to what it originally was.... | By Yentha

Trivandrum: The swimming pool at Water Works grounds, near Vellayambalam, was scheduled to host the aquatic-swimming events for the 35th National Games, which now have been postponed for atleast one year. The 50 meter long swimming pool, that used to be the only one available for the public’s use was drained, dug up and tampered with, to make for a bigger, broader swimming pool. While digging a  pit adjacent to it, the authorities discovered pipes carrying drinking water right beneath the ground. Work on the swimming pool remains frozen ever since.

“We have decided to take out the Water Works Swimming Pool from the list of venues for the National Games,” says Chief Engineer, Ajith A Mohammed.

The story of the ill-fated swimming pool is short and quite straight forward, going by the history of the public works carried out in the state.

The responsibility to see through the rebuilding of Water Works Swimming Pool was given to the National Games Secretariat in 2009. The project was undertaken as a joint venture by Consulting Engineering Services and Sasi Prabhu Associates, Pune.

“And they have failed miserably in their task.” Chief Engineer Ajith states, “Their performance was so lacklustre that they have been removed from charge and a new department made up jointly by BSNL Civil Wing and KITCO (Kerala Industrial and Technical Consultancy Organisation) has been put in place.”

The BSNL Civil Wing has been formed for completing the work that's in progress and KITCO for taking up work that's yet to be started. So the Water Works Swimming Pool falls under BSNL Civil Wing; but now that the swimming pool has been taken off from the venue list, what sort of a 'renovation' can be expected there?

“The pit that has been dug for extending the swimming pool would be first filled up and the original swimming pool would be restored in no time,” Ajith assures.

A technical committee consisting of the PWD Chief Engineer, Chief Technical Examiner, KWA Technical Member, HOD of Civil Department, College of Engineering, Trivandrum and the Chief Engineer of National Games has been formed to decide on the necessary actions to be taken for the timely completion of both the delayed and yet to begin works for the Games to be held by December 2013.

So, if nothing else comes in the way, the Water Works Swimming Pool should be given back to the public, after four years of renovation  and lakhs of rupees, the same way as it was before, hopefully by 2013...

so typical. i was a regular user of that pool - barring the dirty and broken down bathrooms - the pool was in good shape. this is what happens when you tamper with things which may be old but are in working order. I only wish Keralites learn a lesson from this and do not go about breaking other old things - markets, buildings, dams - simply because they are old. Remember old is gold.

I also remember the days when we used to go with friends for a swim there. It was around Rs 10 for an hour I think.I think a renovation to keep up with the times was needed but I think the renovation went awfully bad Hope it will come back much better in 2013.
