Kochi: The Ernakulam district authorities have submitted a proposal to the State Road Safety Authority for a Skywalk at Vyttila. The state Chief Secretary who is also the Chairman of the State Road Safety Authority has in-principle given approval for the project.

The skywalk will be six metres above the ground but this may change since the Metro rail and flyover designs are yet to be finalised. The structure will have three metre wide walk ways while the total length of the skywalk will be 300 metres. High quality stainless steel and aluminum floorings will be used for the construction. The skywalk would cost Rs. 12.5 crores according to the submitted proposal.

The district collector explained that once the Vyttila mobility hub starts to function, the skywalk will become essential. Considering the traffic at the Vyttila junction the district authorities have designed the project for efficient commutation. Apparently, there seems to be an urgent need for a skywalk at Vyttila but the project has to wait until the metro lane alignment is finalised.

The modern Skywalk will be designed keeping in mind the common man’s requirements yet catering to current lifestyles. Once completed the skywalk will be an exceptional structure with shopping malls, hotels, ATM counters, security boxes and public toilets. This has quite a unique design considering other elevated walk ways at major Indian cities. The construction once started can be completed in three months’ time.
