On Jul 30, 2012

Trivandrum: Trivandrum was chosen as one of the five locations in the country where VVPAT (Voter Verified Paper Audit Trial) is being trial tested to garner feedback from voters and check the efficiency of the system. Trial testing in Trivandrum was conducted on Saturday in 13 different places in the city coming under Vattiyoorkavu Assembly Constituency.

Voter Verified Paper Audit Trial (VVPAT) is attached to the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) to facilitate the voter in verifying the person or the party symbol for which the vote has been cast. Immediately after pressing the button to the concerned contestant in the EVM, the name and symbol of the contestant would then appear in the VVPAT in printed form and also in the digital display. The printed copy of the votes castcould be used to double check the results in case of a close finish.

Other than Trivandrum, VVPAT was also trial tested in East Delhi on Saturday. Testing would be done in Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir, and Jaiselmer in Rajasthan on August 11 and in Cherrapunji on August 25. Testing is being done at Cherrapunji to check the performance of the system under extreme conditions, since Cherrapunji is one of the wettest places on Earth.

The EVMs normally used in elections are vulnerable to software corruption. So, the people decision of the fate of an elections stands threatened with manipulation through the usage of EVMs in elections. It is to negate this threat that the Election Commission has decided to introduce VVPAT with EVMs.

VVPAT was trial tested around this same time last year too, but the results obtained during the previous time was less than satisfactory, forcing the Election Commission to repeat the test this year as well.
