Vazhayila Getting Ready To Be City's Eastern Gateway
Traffic Islands, medians, signals, improved landscape will give the junction a smart look | By Yentha

Trivandrum: Commuters entering the city from its eastern gateway through Vazhayila will soon be welcomed with improved landscape, broad treelined streets and streamlined traffic. As the City Road Improvement Project (CRIP) enters its final stages, Vazhayila Jn is all set to don a fresh, aesthetic makeover.

For starters traffic islands would be laid in the junction to streamline the traffic at the junction. Landscaping works would be carried out to provide visual appeal. The tarring of the four laned road from Peroorkada till Vazhayila is ‌being completed, so is the construction of medians and footpaths.

According to officials of Thiruvananthapuram Road Development Company Ltd. (TRDCL), the concessionaire of CRIP, the entire Peroorkada-Vazhayila stretch will be upgraded to world class standards. Trees would be planted along the road sides, and the median towards the Peroorkada side, where it is wide enough, will spot plants along the middle, much like the Kowdiar -Rajbhavan road.

However obstacles remain. The construction of footpath has been stalled on certain sections as the KWA, who owns the land, is yet to transfer the same. Protest over the falling of a tree standing towards the road side has resulted in that much portion being left out from getting upgraded.

Still, by and large, the work is expected to be over by November end by which time TRDCL is expecting to wind up the City Road Improvement Project, nine years after it commenced in 2006.
