Turn Of Events At Vilappilsala
The police smashes open the lock at Waste Treatment Factory. The future looks a bit sinister and uncertain | By Yentha

Trivandrum: In what could be deduced as the first step towards a seemingly sinister future for the people of both Trivandrum city and Vilappilsala, the lock which was put at the entrance of the Vilappilsala Waste Treatment Plant was smashed open under heavy security by the police earlier this morning.

While the police arrived fully geared up to face a situation of violent protest from the people of Vilappilsala, an ironic turn off events saw both the people, under the leadership of the Vilappilsala Samara Samithi, and the Vilappilsala Grama Panchayath keeping a safe distance away from the scene of action.

“The police are doing their duty in accordance with the judgement passed by High Court. We respect the court’s decision and so wouldn’t come in the way of the police. But we would be approaching the Supreme Court for obtaining justice for the people,” was what Panchayath President Shobhana George had to say on the matter.

The Samithi members, meanwhile, has taken the stand that they have got nothing to do with the lock or the breaking of the lock by the police. “The lock was put there by the Panchayath and the Samithi has nothing to do with it. But the fact remains that no truck carrying waste from the city will enter Vilappilsala; we are prepared to go to any extent to make sure on that.” says Samithi Secretary Beretson.

Though it may seem unlikely on the outside, the Panchayath President but insists that both Panchayath and the Samara Samithi are on the same page.“We are fully aware of the public emotion and we stand by the people. If they say they won’t allow any waste carrying trucks to enter Vilappilsala, we are there to support them on the issue,” said Sobhana Kumari.

The lock was placed at the entrance of the plant by the Panchayath on December 21. But a few weeks later the High Court ordered the factory to be reopened and recommence its operation. While it is being reported that the factory has begun functioning shortly after the police had broke the lock, the fact is that the waste treatment factory had never ceased its functioning in the first place. The primary objective of the people of Vilappilsala under the Samara Samithi had always been barring the entry of waste carrying trucks into the Panchayath.

It is still unclear when the trucks would start arriving at the place, but a simple guess would put it at ‘soon’ as the city is literally being buried under its own waste. With the Samithi members intent on stopping the trucks at all cost, the future looks a bit sinister and uncertain indeed at Vilappilsala.
