Trivandrum: It is impossible for people moving through the 'Rajaveethi' not to take note of the huge globe, or rather half of it, set up in front of the Kanakakunnu palace as part of 'Surkshaayanam 2012'. The week long event is being jointly organised by the Revenue Department, The Disaster Management Authority and the Institute of Land and Disaster Management.

Inside the globe is a screening room where short films on some of history's most infamous disasters are shown, while explaining how the disasters could have been averted at the same time.

In the exhibition section, various Government departments, the Police, Military, Fire and Security Force, ISRO and various other private agencies have put on display the various types of disasters they are required to deal with and the protective gears used during rescue operations.

The stall by the Military and State Police are major attractions at the exhibition, which also houses stalls by NATPAC, which provides detailed information about the upcoming Monorail project, the State Electricity Board and the Kerala Water Authority each displaying working models of the disasters that could happen in the form of water contaminations and electrocution. The replica of the area coming under the Mullaperiyar dam project and models explaining efficient ways of waste water treatment are some of the other items of interest at the venue.

Towards the rear entrance of the palace compound is the replica of a traffic junction designed by the Kerala Motor Vehicles Department. The I&PRD (Information and Public Relations Department) has a separate section here where photographs taken in war fronts is put on display. Workshops on disaster risk reduction and contingency planning would be held on March 9 and 10.
