Trivandrum: This piece of news seems to soothe everyone especially since this summer has been almost unbearable. The sun has been beating down with no respite. Finally, the capital is set to have air-conditioned bus shelters, a little cheer for all commuters.

These commuters can wait in air-conditioned comfort which does give them additional security as well. These have come about thanks to the efforts of District Collector Biju Prabhakar. He has roped in banks to have ATMs inside each shelter.

These shelters will have facilities like LED display panel, FM Radio, CCTVs and so on. It is learnt that some of these facilities would bring in revenue to run these shelters.

The five identified bus shelters in phase 1 are at University College Hostel, Palayam, near University Library canteen on the VJT-Asan Square Road, near Students' Centre, and opposite Mascot Hotel, and the designated bus stop near the KHRWS paywards in Medical College.

Chennai got its first air-conditioned bus stop near Asargana, St. Thomas Mount on Grand Southern Trunk Road in May last year. It cost them Rs. 1.25 crore for a bus stop.
