Trivandrum: The  Rs 5 cr worth renovation that is being carried out at Kanakakunnu Palace grounds is scheduled to be completed by December 31.

“All major works have been completed. Currently final landscaping works including the planting of grass is being carried out. We are aiming to finish the works by December 31 so as to open the renovated palace grounds to the public by 2016,” said M Laila, Project Engineer,  KLDC (Kerala Land Development Corporation).

The renovation works, initially pegged at Rs 3.05 cr and later revised to Rs 5 cr, includes landscaping works, laying walkways and revamping the Nishagandhi auditorium. The first phase of the renovated grounds was inaugurated by the Chief Minister during Onam.

No relief for Sooryakanti

Once renovated, the Kanakakunnu palace grounds will no longer be playing host to the make-shift theme parks which is a big attraction during festive times. As per official announcement the theme parks are to be set up at Sooryakanthi grounds in future.

However, at present the Sooryakanthi grounds is lying in a neglected condition with fallen trees, rusted structures and overgrown shrubs. The initial promise was to revamp the area including the road leading towards it, but the plan seems to be put on hold, at least for now with neither the Tourism Department nor KLDC prepared to make any concrete statements regarding it.
