| Trivandrum: The gaining popularity of Ponmudi as a favourable holiday spot among the city population also has the adverse effect of turning it into a litter zone of discarded plastic materials. To keep a check on this mounting problem, the forest department has implemented some tough measures to strictly enforce the ban on littering the place with plastic. Visitors to Ponmudi are hereafter instructed to carry as less plastic bottles as they can, if heading towards the Upper Sanatorium of the hill station. At the eco tourism check-post, visitors will be charged an amount of Rs. 50 as 'caution deposit' for each plastic bottle carried; refundable on return, provided each visitor has the same number of plastic bottles as before. 'Sabari' mineral water is available from the check post at Rs. 25 a bottle, of which Rs. 10 is returned on handing back the empty bottle. |
The new rules at Ponmudi for garbage disposal will be enforced by the Forest Division. Divisional Officer P Pugazhenthi has requested the public to cooperate with the department on the new restrictions put in place. Earlier on Saturday, a team under P Pugazhenthi had conducted a cleanliness drive at Ponmudi Upper Sanatorium retrieving more than 20 sacks of thrown away plastic.
