Trivandrum: The air was rife with tension even before the sun dawned on Vilappilsala Grama Panchayath. The official news was that the first of the waste carrying trucks would be heading to the waste treatment factory on Monday, anytime between 11 and 5 during the day. The thousands of protesters were ready, rejuvenated at the opportunity to show how firm they really were on winning their rights. It was the day of the people at Vilappilsala Grama Panchayath, as arrests and grenades failed to make way for the trucks of garbage to pass through the human wall.

The protest, which ran for hours, saw many dramatic moments including the arrest and removal of Panchayath President Shobhana Kumari. The police seemed visibly ill equipped to handle the situation, as there wasn't even sufficient number of female police officers at the spot to arrest and remove the female protesters. Down the road, stones were hurled at the trucks and at the police who stood guard to the trucks. In retaliation, the police resorted to lathicharge and at times used smoke grenades to disperse the crowd, which was on its way to turning into a mob. Various people were injured in the violence, including Panchayath Member Biju.

The process of arresting and removing protesters was obviously never going to work as the people -ranging in age from six to sixty - had arrived in thousands. In the end, at around three in the afternoon, the armored personnel in uniform were instructed to turn back, bringing on cheers from all across the gathered thousands.

“You’d better call me some other time, it is too loud here; everyone is rejoicing at the victory,” was what Gopinatha Pillai, Executive Member of Vilappilsala Janakiya Samithi, could manage to say when Yentha tried to get a word out of him.

Various people were injured and taken to the hospital. A hartal has been declared at Vilappilsala Panchayath on Tuesday, protesting against the police violence and the arrest of Panchayath President Shobhana Kumari.

“Right now I am with my co-workers who are being taken to the hospital,” said Panchayath Vice President Vinod Rajan. “There are several casualties and in all the confusion, it is still unclear if anyone’scondition is serious. We have called for a hartal at Vilappilsala Grama Panchayath on Tuesday.”

But in the end, all went well for the people, as the police decided to retreat along with the waste trucks. But the city is being littered with waste and various cases of fever, with dengue being the most prominent among them,  being reported from many areas within the city.

The Corporation has literally run out of options and in all probability, the trucks would return tomorrow or the day after. The people were celebrating as the sun set on Vilappilsala; but the question remains – will the next dawn be as fortunate as the previous one for the people?

If Trivandrum corporation and Government wants to convince people on new technology they can try at Putharikandom Ground by building a model garbage disposal system or there are are many vacant places inside the city to build up mini plants. Why one local government institution try to dump waste by overpowering people there at vilapil which is governed by different institution. Why can not leaders of Trivandrum City respect life and dignity of Vilappil Villagers. There are two areas in Kerala where girls do not get suitable proposals one is at village where Garbage plant exists at Villapil.
