Trivandrum: The Kochi Metro Rail Ltd. (KMRL), the Special Purpose Vehicle  formed to carry out the metro rail project, is to have a new Managing Director, as per the decision taken by the cabinet meeting convened here on Tuesday. The present MD Tom Jose has been relieved from the job, with Power Secretary Elias George replacing him as the new Managing Director. Tom Jose has been moved to the PWD department.

Additionally the government has also placed Chief Secretary K Jayakumar, Finance Secretary VP Joy and Water Resources Principal Secretary VJ Kurien in the Directorial Board of KMRL. The state government can recommend a total of five nominees to the board. The other nominees are from the central government.

The construction of Kochi Metro would be taken up by DMRC. Decision would be soon made regarding the land acquisition and funding of the project. The Chief Minister said that the decision to replace the MD of KMRL was made on the grounds of administrative purposes.

Incidentally, former MD Tom Jose was not too enthusiastic about DMRC being involved with Kochi Metro; he was of the opinion of floating global tenders for carrying out the state's dream project.
