Trivandrum: The foundation stone for Medical College bus stand was laid a year back. The work which was to have been completed in a year is at its final stage and is expected to be commissioned by March 2012. Although the junction is yet to have a proper bus stand, it does have a functioning station master's office inside the skeleton of an old KSRTC bus, that which has been an object of ridicule for over forty years now.

At present, buses with routes starting and ending at Medical College Junction are being parked along  the main road, which adds to the already congested traffic conditions. The medium sized bus stand building, being constructed on 1.10 acres of land right next to the Ganapathy temple, will be a four storeyed commercial complex with car parking facilities in the basement.

“The first priority is to have the commercial complex up and functioning. It is the revenue generated from there that would pay back the investment of five crores invested on the project,” says R Ajith, Chief Engineer, TRIDA.

The bus stand has been designed for the buses to enter and exit the platform, one at a time. The bay area would provide idling space for up to seven buses at a time.

“This is a social project carried out by TRIDA under the Medical College Development Scheme. The rehabilitation building for the shopkeepers who were to be displaced by the coming up of the bus stand and the residential apartment building meant for the people who had to give up their homes for the same have already been completed,” Explains Ajith.

Although the project is going on at a smooth pace and is expected to be completed as per the current schedule, it is still not completely devoid of any hurdles on the way though.

“There is still an agreement with the KSRTC pending, about dividing the revenue that would be generated. But it should be cleared up soon. Both parties' priority lies in having the bus stand open to the public at the earliest.”

A bus stand at the Medical College Junction will go a long way in easing the chaotic traffic that clogs up the streets in the area during a major portion  of the day. With the widening of the entire stretch from Ulloor Junction to Pattom Junction via Medical College nearing completion, along with the construction of the Murinjapalam Bridge, the traffic condition of the five kilometer stretch, which happens to be one of the vital stretches in the entire city, is expected to smoothen out within a short period of time...
