Trivandrum: Transport Minister V S Sivankutty released the logo of ‘Gandhi Peace Bus’ organised by the Gandhi Samarak Nidhi of Kerala on February 21 at Thycaud Gandhi Bhavan. ‘Gandhi Peace Bus’ is an inter- state journey of 50 selected youngsters from Kanyakumari to Manglore touching various places associated with Gandhiji’s activities during India’s freedom struggle.

“There is a necessity to empower the young generation on Gandhiyan philosophies. The elders should teach them about Gandhi and also insist them to follow the Mahatma’s message. His message has a great importance in today’s world,” said the Minister in his inaugural address.

50 youngsters from Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka will start this journey from Kanyakumari on May 8, 2012. They will conduct meetings, gatherings and honour the freedom fighters to commemorate the life of Mahatma Gandhi. The journey will conclude in Mangalore on May 23.

“We had given advertisements in news papers inviting applications from the interested youth. We selected 40 youngsters out of the applicants. We appraised their social concern and knowledge about Mahatma,” said one among the organisers.

The peace bus is a part of the Diamond Jubilee celebration of the Kerala Gandhi Smarak Nidhi which started functioning in 1951 as state unit of the all India Gandhi Memorial Trust. It is a voluntary setup, pledged to carry out the programmes and ideals propounded by Mahatma Gandhi.
