Trivandrum: The people of the southern fringes of the state will now get a breather, as the long awaited Mainline Electrical Multiple Units (MEMU) train will start its service in Kollam-Nagercoil route, from tomorrow. This is the third MEMU service in Kerala- the first two being Kollam-Ernakulam (Via Alleppey) and Kollam- Ernakulam (Via Kottayam) services.
Though the service would be a boon for the daily commuters in the Kollam – Nagercoil route, MEMU can’t be an alternative to their problems as the timings are as follows:
So the students and office goers can’t avail this service to its best. While talking to Yentha, the railway officials said, “Since there is no separate track for MEMU and so many other trains are allotted during peak hours, we can’t change the timings of MEMU.”
Unlike the MEMU services in other states, this one has the toilet facility. “Ernakulam-Palakkad MEMU is on the cards. Hopefully, it will be on track soon,” the officials added.
The flagging off will be held on tomorrow at Kollam. The MEMU rake arrived at Kollam on November 28. The MEMU has higher capacity than normal general coaches. The regular service will commence from Dec 2. The inaugural special will run to open with stoppages at all the enroute stations in both directions.
