Is Pettah Pre-paid Auto Counter Looting People?
The fare system seems to be illogical; a total rip-off at Trivandrum Pettah station | Akhil Rajarathinam

Trivandrum: The pre-paid auto rickshaw counter at the Pettah railway station is a boon especially for those coming by trains late in the evening. However, things here have not necessarily gone as per plan.

The prepaid auto rickshaw counter at Pettah seems to fleece the passengers hiring the auto rickshaws. The rates fixed for travel between nearby places seem to be much higher that the rates charged by local auto rickshaws.

Bivinlal, a daily user of these prepaid autos showed his 'pre-paid receipt' to this reporter and said, “I go to my office (at Statue) daily by auto after getting down at the Pettah railway station. This is my daily routine. These autos are charging Rs.44 for the 3 km journey between Pettah and Statue. Since, this is my only easy option, I am compelled to use this. I’ve travelled in other auto rickshaws and it costs much lesser.”

The pre-paid counter was started in response to the complaints regarding excess fares demanded by local auto rickshaw drivers. But this counter is now proving to be counter productive.

The auto drivers, however, had a difference in opinion. “We are not charging the rate on our own. The rates are being fixed by the authorities. A committee comprising representatives from Traffic Police and the Transport Department prepared the fare chart. Keltron is in charge of the ticket system. Many people asked us the same thing and we have only this answer for them,” said a few auto drivers while speaking to Yentha.

Editor's note: Yentha will follow up this story with the concerned authorities.

I have found this to be true at the prepaid auto counter near the Medical College. And at times the one near East Fort.

Yes 100 percentage true. Almost every where there is a certain sort of adjustments like this with the Auto Drivers and the billers. Time has already crossed to convert it into Apps as well as their system got manually added values for Kilometers. They need to calculate the distance via GPS and Google Maps, most of them confuses us at the peak time of urgent travel with a difference in km opinions and plenty are getting fooled up all over. It is a total mess.

I find the one at the Central Railway station to be completely reliable. This may be because there is always a policeperson there to sign you into the auto unlike the other places. So maybe that is what is needed and not a million apps.

Dear Asha, Thanks for your big brainy suggestion. Its valuable... When planning budget and town planning, i found it is very difficult to keep monthly salaried Police Men, 24x7 always in the mid sun to drain out in this hot summer. It would have been good if you think about how can we keep the salaried police men in air-conditioned room to control it. Why you wanted police men to see working hard like a labor in mid sun ? Police men have a much more valuable profile than u expected in the society. As well we are moving into an era of driver less compact vehicles ;) Apps are of one time coding. If you look around even the tiny kids used to code it free of cost for people around. We are moving into an era in-order to uplift ourselves, we need more talented workers in other distinguished layers. Travel with the time Dear ;)
