Trivandrum: The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has acquired 5.79 acres of land along the Kazhakootam – Kovalam NH by-pass at Enchakkal. The decision to build a new bus stand at Enchakkal to handle long distance services within the state and inter-state services was announced more than two years ago. However not even the preliminary steps to build a new bus stand has been taken up by the Corporation at Enchakkal.

Officials from the civil section of the Corporation say that a design is still to be decided upon for building the bus stand. An announcement was made that a two floor terminal cum shopping complex would be built at Enchakkal at a budget of 35 crores. But the officials now say that neither the design nor the budget for the project has been evaluated or even entrusted to anyone.

At present the land acquired by the KSRTC at Enchakkal has been labelled and is being used for road tests to be conducted. The affixed board says 'KSRTC Operating Centre'. The 20 AC Low-Floor buses operate from here. After their day's duty, these buses return to this plot by night. Right now, the staff has to be on duty only during the night. During the day, the land remains more or less unoccupied and hence driving tests are conducted here. But other than that, nothing is going on in Enchakkal, certainly nothing related with a bus terminal.

The new terminal at Thampanoor is nearing completion. The ultimate aim of the new terminal is the decongestion of Thampanoor and the decongestion part of the plan will remain unfulfilled until at least a part of the 1000+ services currently operating from Thampanoor are moved to another spot. Under the present situation, the new terminal is bound to cater to the bus services of all sections and the decongestion of Thamapanoor will only remain on paper, since Enchakkal does not hold much promise considering the speed at which the documents are being processed.
