Trivandrum: It was in November last that several important dignitaries including religious leaders in Trivandrum proclaimed their support for the National Initiative For Safe Sound (NISS). It’s a new year and as the religious festival season is approaching, the district collector Biju Prabhakar has quite unequivocally declared his solid stand against sound pollution.

In a press interaction he said, “Anyone who breaks sound pollution rules established in the district, based on Supreme Court ruling and central government regulations, will have to face serious consequences.”

In the business area, the sound level should be in between 75-70 decibels. It should be between 55-45 decibels in industrial regions. Within 100m of hospitals and schools the sound should only be between 50-40 decibels. Loudspeakers and amplifiers can only be operated under particular restrictions from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Serious repercussions await those who are responsible for sound pollution after 10 p.m., especially those who use amplifiers on top of moving vehicles.

Biju Prabhakar added, “The public can lodge their complaints regarding this menace to our control rooms.”

The control room phone numbers are as follows:
