Trivandrum: The December Fest organized as part of the Grand Kerala Shopping Festival Season Five is on at the Kanakakunnu Palace grounds. The festival was inaugurated by Speaker G Kathikeyan on December 25.

While the food court and the mini amusement park are hot favorites with children, the Kerala Village model and Tree House erected here have turned out to be hot favorites, especially among the youth who seem to be enjoying the novel experience. Next to it is the Adivasi Ooru (tribal hamlet), in front of which is a long line of people eager to get in, especially the elderly.

Reason? The practitioners of tribal medicine, present in there. While minor cases are attended to immediately, for serious problems there is a booking counter. The popularity of this ‘stall’ and the line of people patiently waiting for their traditional doctor and eagerly taking their medicines from him only prove how much faith the society has in traditional forms of treatment. You also get to sample some of their ethnic cuisine here.

If music is what you are in quest of, the mela is ready to fulfill that too. Joys Musical industries has on display musical instruments from all over the world. Besides being able to buy or sell instruments here, you can also learn more about them and get information on classes.

The attractive Uttar Pradesh silky carpets and sygi carpets are available here, ranging from Rs. 2,200 to Rs 5,000. Rajasthani Royal Paint Handloom bed sheets with Kalamkari print, Zebra print, Chikku colour, paper paint etc. are available from Rs. 180- Rs. 880.Jaipuri cotton tops, nighties for daily use are available from Rs. 100 to Rs. 550. You can also buy pretty accessories, the ever popular Kolapuri chappals (Rs. 200 to Rs. 400) and delicious Kozhikodan Halwa (Rs. 140 to Rs.240 per kilo). The unique collection of home decorating items from Lotus is also a huge draw here.

Besides Central Bank of India, insurance agencies like LIC, Star Health and Allied Insurance Company Ltd. have set up stalls here. The State Government’s attempt to create awareness in the public about road safety and signals is a commendable initiative.

If wheels interest you, the exhibition has an array of vehicles starting from 1957 models to the latest fully loaded ones. KSRTC driver NS Vijayakumar’s collection includes the oldest car here, including a 1958 Benz.
