Trivandrum: It has been decided by the State Police to call for an immediate cancellation of driver's license in case of an accidental death involving a heavy vehicle and if the driver of the heavy vehicle is found to be guilty of causing the accident. An increased death ratio for the number of heavy vehicles on the road was mooted as the main reason for the Police Department to call for strong measures in accidents involving heavy vehicles.

The total number of vehicles within the state stands at around 65 lakhs of which approximately five lakhs are heavy vehicles. While death due to road accidents stood at 4,145 victims in the State during 2011, 1085 of them lost their lives due to accidents involving heavy vehicles. In other words, while there were 65 accidental deaths reported for every one lakh of the total number of vehicles, the heavy vehicles ratio stood at 215 deaths for every one lakh vehicles.

Carelessness among the drivers of heavy vehicles proves fatal to those on the road. The common public relying on smaller vehicles, especially two wheelers which account for a bulk of the 65 lakh vehicles on roads in the State, have been advised to be extra cautious with heavy vehicles and drivers instructed to always ride wearing a helmet.

Accidental death involving tipper trucks too have a much higher ratio amongst heavy vehicles. The drastic measures have been implemented to bring a sense of awareness among the drivers of heavy vehicles to assure the safety of other motorists.
