'An Edible Invite'

Trivandrum: Breaking with the routine of using paper invites, city-based advertising agency Ridge Events and Media Private Ltd decided to try something innovative by printing the invitation for their first anniversary celebrations on tender coconuts. But only 200 chosen guests managed to receive these `tender coconut invites' welcoming them to the fiesta at the banquet hall of Taj Vivanta.

“Being an ad agency we wanted to be different. Initially we thought of printing it in recycled papers. Then we decided to go for a more eco-friendly card by choosing something in nature. Finally we decided to print the invitation on coconuts,” explained Satyan Nair, CEO,  Ridge Events and Media Private Ltd.

According to Satyan, coconut is considered as a symbol of blessing. Breaking the coconut before any auspicious occasion is practiced widely in Indian culture. Hence the company decided to use coconuts to print their invitation.

“We tried to merge simplicity and creativity. We had a tough time printing the invitations. The printers could print only 25 to 30 invitations per day. The coconuts were carried in eco-friendly gift bags and we personally distributed it to the destinations,” added the CEO.

“It was something very different to see an invitation on a coconut. I appreciate their innovation. We were surprised seeing it. I drank the tender coconut water yesterday after going back from work,” beamed Deepa, an invitee.

The welcome notes on the coconut had the logo of the organisation, the date and time of the program, the dress code for the invitees and the venue.

Ridge Events and Media Private Ltd. is a full service ad agency managed by R K Group of Companies, launched last year. It provides total marketing and promotional support to their clients.
