Trivandrum: When Ezhilarasan began painting in 1996, he would probably have dreamt of having his very own art exhibition and it has become reality less than twenty years later. ‘Non-No Object Necessary’ is a collection of twenty five of Ezhijarasan’s abstract pieces which are exhibited at La Gallery from this 7th to 21st in the city.
Inspired by his brother’s passion for art, Ezhilarasan enrolled at a college in Pondicherry to further his knowledge of art and nurture his painting prowess. After graduating from college, he moved to Chennai to pursue a Master’s degree, which he completed in 2004.
The paintings are fairly abstract in nature and are left to the audience’s interpretation, although the artist himself claims that they represent his personal experiences. He uses oil paints and acrylic emulsion to convey his day-to-day emotions. Each of his pieces is a diary entry, a documentation of his daily life.

The exhibition consists of three series of paintings - black and white, colour and photographic series (the last one yet to be completed). The artist prepares the photographic pieces by taking the print out of the photos and then painting over them. Amidst the abstract shapes and the colour blocks, there are quotes that provide insight into the nature of each work. His favourite part of the exhibition is the art and sex section, as he feels it succeeds in portraying his own experiences with utmost authenticity. Titles of some paintings in this section are ‘Inside your body’ and ‘How they are enjoying!’.
Ezhilarasan uses distorted objects and ambiguous shapes to convey a different message in each of his paintings. Inspired by his travels and views on life, the ‘Non-No Object Necessary’ paintings is his autobiography on canvas. |
