Trivandrum: Asian School of Business (ASB) and Young India, the youth wing of the Confederation of Indian Industry is jointly organizing a talk on “Dabbawalas - A Lecture on Commitment, Management and Discipline,” on February 27 at ASB’s campus in Pallipuram, Trivandrum.

During the session, Dr. Pawan Giridharilal Agarwal who published his doctoral thesis on the logistics and supply chain management of the Mumbai-based service providers in extensive detail will discuss how Dabbawalas have become the most reliable and admired business structures in the world.

The Dabbawalas are a 5,000-strong community of extraordinarily disciplined workers who carry and deliver freshly made food from home in lunch boxes to nearly 200,000 people employed across Mumbai. This century year old trade has become an integral part of Mumbai’s culture. In spite of the traffic snarls and heavy rainfall Dabbawalas are known for their punctuality and the accuracy of their supply chain. Their error rate is one in 16 million transactions.

“The business students and practitioners will benefit by taking valuable lessons of the logistics and supply chain system of this highly specialised trade. We intend to provide wider understanding about the Dabbawalas and their exemplary service,” said professor S Rajeev, Director, ASB.

Dr. Agarwal, the resource person is an academician, subject expert and the president of Mumbai-based Kamlabai Educational and Charitable Trust which runs a programme providing free education to the Dabbawalas and their children.
