Movie Review: Ek Dewaana Tha (Hindi) – And He Was PAAGAL !!!
Gowtham Vasudevan Menon in his 3rd attempt seems so lost... | By Neil Xavier

I don’t think every time you wait patiently you are rewarded with what you need. At least, not in this case. I did not watch VTV (Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaarya) for the very reason that I am a fan of neither Chimbu nor Trisha. And I never thought of watching the original Telugu version of the movie either. But then, I was waiting for the Hindi version of this extraordinary movie, which my friend Shankar claims is his energy booster whenever he feels down in the dumps. He has been saying that about the Tamil version of course.

Prateik Babbar and Amy Jackson!!! Wow what a combination! This was my initial reaction when I watched the trailers of the movie. The songs sounded the same, she looked good, he looked good and I was sure that this was the VTV that was meant for me. I could not wait to turn it into an energy booster for me too. Thank God I had a bottle of soft drink with me when I finally watched the movie. If not I would have  fainted from the energy loss from watching it!!!

What’s with the movie anyway? A guy and a girl and she is kind of a confused psycho. He proposes, she refuses but lets him kiss her; then again she tells him not to meet her, she goes on saying how much she enjoyed his kiss but makes a big fuss and asks him why he kissed her. And oh, yeah, by the way, she is a Malayali.

From what I understand, the guy is totally in love with her and he would do anything for her. But it’s just the dialogues that say all that; there is absolutely no expression on either face. Zero chemistry between the two. Both of them seem to sport a ‘what am I doing here’ look from the beginning to the end of the movie!

I have to say that the failure of this movie starts with the casting. Amy Jackson as a Malayali girl - okay let’s accept that. But why in the world did Gowtham M opt for a dark makeup for her. Hasn’t Gowtham seen Malayali girls who are fairer than English girls. Pratiek has been a favourite of mine from all his other movies but here, the poor chap seemed to have no clue about what he was trying to do.

Emotionless faces, bad frames, illogically placed songs … my list of peeves is endless, but the movie lacked everything, which I had heard people rave about VTV.

And yes, I cannot forget the way in which the entire Kerala episode was shot. Seemed as if he was portraying a Kerala from some 20 years back. Babu Antony who played Amy’s father and the guy who played Pratiek’s friend did a decent job.

Practice is supposed to make perfect, but here, Gowtham Vasudevan Menon in his 3rd attempt seems so lost. And after watching this movie, I have decided upon one thing. Maybe I should go back to VTV and see how it came to be called as one cult classic of a movie.

Ek Dewaana Tha… but who cares is my say on this flick.

Let me go for a 5/10 for this confused love story.
