I still remember the first time I searched for Aravaan in YouTube and that was because my friend mentioned that singer Karthik was turning a music director with this movie. I found it and fell in love with the song 'Nilaa Nilaa' and the way it was picturised. Since then, many months have gone by and there I was, sitting with my friends at Anjali Theatre, Trivandrum to watch Aravaan.
Aravaan is a movie inspired by a Tamil novel. The movie tells the story of Chinna (played by Aadi) and how he leaves behind a life of hidden identity. With his new name Veera Puli, he moves to a village where men are thieves and robbery is their means of livelihood. Explaining more about the story line would be a foolish attempt since it’s so confusing. Yes, the language is difficult to understand as it’s a Tamil movie, which is set back in the 18th century. |
The music was fine. But the songs were picturised with such modern frames that I felt I was watching a 2050 movie rather than an 18th century one. Some costumes in the 'Nilaa Nilaa' song can be found only in London or Paris fashion week. The script, the direction, costumes, the frames and many other things needed to be changed in this movie to make it what it really should have been.
It’s just the final 30 minutes of the movie and the flashback of Aadi’s character that I really liked. But for all the hard work, I am going for a 6/10 for Aravaan.
