Campus Talk: Moulding Women For Greater Heights

 More than 4000 girls walk into the campus of Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Cotton Hill, Trivandrum aspiring to become successful women in life.  This school is known as the number one girls’ school in Asia, supported by 160 teaching staff and 12 non teaching staff.

 




“We go beyond formal education system. We have particular concern with emerging trends, issues and the future.  We inspire our students to to chase their dreams,” smiled Mary Sislet Princellia, Principal of Cotton Hill School.

Spread over 9 acres of land, this school is situated in the heart of Trivandrum city.  Founded in 1859 by Maharaja Uthram Thirunal, the school has lower primary, upper primary and high school classes providing qualitative education.

 

This educational institution had been functioning in the current building that houses Sanskrit college at Palayam until the tenure of Sir C P Ramaswamy Iyer, the Divan of Travancore. Initially there were only upper primary and lower primary sections. It was upgraded to a high school in 1935.


 

“We establish an environment for the students to sprout with spirit of co-operation and mutual respect. We aim at the spiritual, intellectual and physical development of every student. Our extracurricular activity clubs empower the growth of the children,” said Mini S, Principal, HSS.

 

The school was adorned with the title “School of Excellence” in 2010, considering the achievements of the past 159 years. The campus is known for its salubrious atmosphere, excellence in teaching, high degree of discipline, and multiplicity of avenues for all round growth of the individual, drawing appreciative accolades from all over Kerala.

 

 

 

Compulsory uniform, punctuality, cleanliness and good conduct have to be strictly followed by all the students of the School.   Every student has to participate in the activities conducted by various clubs of this institution.

 

The English club promotes the interest of the young women in language and literature.


 

 

“We hold meetings, observe all important dates, organize English assemblies and conduct various literary activities in this club,” tittered Athira, a high school student.

 


 

 

The school premises are beautified by green plants maintained by the forestry club with an intention to bring the students close to nature. There are about 150 students in this club. The club organises field trips and programmes on environmental conservation. The students here are encouraged to reduce the use of plastics.



 

The health club representatives of each class organize Suchitwa Sena and awareness programmes on various health aspects like contagious diseases, health and hygiene, diabetes and skin diseases on all Thursdays.

 

 

With an intention to generate social concern among the growing buds, the social science Club observes all important days, educates students on current affairs, holds competitions and prepares slogans and posters.



Motivational speaker, Dr Manipaul conducts counseling programs for children every week on behalf of the teenage club of the school.




There is a strong Parent Teachers Association (PTA) stands as a strong pillar of support for all the decisions taken by the head of the institution. The parents and the teachers work hand in hand for the proper administration of the school.

 

The school has a well established library to encourage and facilitate learning from around the world on a variety of subjects. Well equipped computer labs develop every child with appreciative skills in Information Technology. Spacious laboratories and audio visual rooms are another highlight of this school.

 

 

Sports and games are also given equal importance in this school as they focus on over all development of a child.

 

“We provide an environment in which every student discovers and realizes her potential. We sharply focus on pursuit of knowledge and skill to attain high academic standards,” said Rajashree, a Computer Science teacher.
