Behind The Camera: Casanova (Malayalam) - The Big Budget Extravaganza!
The existing records are already being penciled over as the team of Mohanlal, Rosshan Andrrews and writer duo of Bobby-Sanjay gears up to rewrite all box office records through ‘Casanova’ | By Yentha

Come January 26 and one of the most anticipated movies in the entire film career of superstar Mohanlal will hit theatres. ‘Casanova’ is rumoured to be made at a budget of around 15 crores, making it the most expensive Malayalam movie made till date. Shooting for the film was done primarily at Dubai and Bangkok and the movie also features a bevy of beautiful ladies in the lead - Bhavana, Lekshmi Rai, Shreya Saran, Sameera Reddy, Sanjjanaa and Roma.  Directed by Rosshan Andrrews, with script by the Bobby – Sanjay duo, ‘Casanova’ has already been hyped up immensely by eager fans anxious to see ‘Lalettan’ back in form.

‘Casanova’ refers to a man noted for his amorous adventures. And in the movie ‘Casanova’, Mohanlal plays the eponymous role as the owner of ‘Casanova’s Eternal Spring’, an international chain of flower boutiques. As a man who believes that ‘love can cure crime’, as someone who knows how to treat a lady with respect and as a man who runs the most successful flower business in the world, ‘Casanova’ has at his beck and call a faithful array of female followers including his staff, girlfriends and former girlfriends. The turnaround in the story happens when four enterprising young criminals decide to use him in their quest to make some quick money.

Director Rosshan Andrrews, who has already given the superstar two blockbusters in ‘Udayanaanu Thaaram’ and ‘Ividam Swargamanu’, feels that there is no one better than Mohanlal who could pull off a stylized ‘Casanova’ act with aplomb.

“I think Mohanlal’s onscreen flamboyant image goes superbly with this character,” says the director.

The movie, in the words of the director, is a “sleek, romantic action thriller with many stylishly shot action sequences that have cost a fortune.”

One of the many beauties whom the actor would be wooing onscreen is Sanjjanaa, the Bangalore based actress making her debut in Malayalam through ‘Casanova’. And the actor is only too excited about the opportunity she got to work with Mohanlal.

“Mohanlal is one of the most respected actors in the country and to make my Malayalam debut, playing the lead opposite him is just incredible. It is going to be one of the biggest films of my career,” says an ecstatic Sanjjanaa.

The writers Bobby and Sanjay, from whom ‘Casanova’ comes, after one of the biggest hits of 2011, ‘Traffic’, remain composed even after the hype that has reached astronomic proportions.

“We do not want to be branded into any particular genre. We write what we like to see in films, something not touched before, something fresh. ‘Casanova’ is our dream of a rich visual treat with fights and special effects, swanky cars and all that,” the writer duo states.

Mohanlal had a 100% year in 2011 as all of his five releases went on to become super hits in the box-office, the latest being Priyadarshan’s ‘Arabiyum Ottakavum P Madhavan Nairum’. But the successful run is not limited to the actor alone; the entire industry is on a roll, with 2011 being dubbed as the most successful year for the industry since 2000.  With a budget of 15 crore and a host of beautiful ladies seen romancing a superstar, it is only natural for ‘Casanova’ to be compared with a major Bollywood or Kollywood release. But Mohanlal prefers to see it in a whole other perspective:

“The audience should desist from making comparisons and understand that our industry has certain limitations; but we work around these limitations with good stories, songs and action sequences. As actors, we are putting in our best and I speak for all the technicians associated with the film,” said the actor.

The multiple delays in releasing the film, due to numerous unforeseen reasons, have actually done wonders by creating a hype that surpasses that of any other film in recent memory. All three names – four to be precise, considering that the script is being written by two – posses an enviable record of scoring hits with different subjects treated innovatively. And the high success rate that the director Rosshan Andrews, superstar Mohanlal and scriptwriters Bobby-Sanjay command in their careers is sure to boost up expectations for the movie.

The film also stars veteran actors Jagathy Sreekumar and Shankar, along with Mohanlal and the horde of beautiful ladies. Camera is by Gim Ganesh, music by Gopi Sundar, Gauri and Alphonse Joseph, art direction by Sunil and costumes by Sai. The movie is being produced by Dr. C J Roy of Confident Group and would be distributed by Ashirwad through Max Lab.

a very poorly written review with very little research done which explains the incorrect facts. coming to the movie, the movie was all hype and very poor in terms of content. lalettan is too old to pull off a modern casanovva character. pranayam was awesome, swapnaveedu was good. wonder how the other movies can be called hits. i do not think selling cable rights and remake rights is what makes a movie a hit, maybe it gives something back to the producer.
