The Drama Club: New To School?
Amiya Hisham gives a list of ten things you need to know before joining a new school.

If you're joining kindergarten things are so easy to get along with. You're your silly, small, innocent, forgetful, cute self. So nobody has a problem with it because everybody is more or less the same at that age. A fight over a broken crayon is forgotten before the day ends. It’s pretty fine till you've reached teenage. It's funny how things go so horribly weird around this time. I don’t know about other teens but I get really conscious when among an unfamiliar crowd. So far, going to a new school has been most terrifying for me. I gathered the following about things you can, can't, should and shouldn't and won't be able to do when you're new (especially if you are a girl):

  1. You just won't be fully satisfied with how things run in this new place. I kept comparing my old school to this new one and after a few months I realised it’s no use. After you are well settled, find the right people to share your ideas with.
  2. Don’t smile too much. It can be a potentially dangerous thing to do. You don't want to give them any ideas too soon.
  3. Keep things friendly. Talk to everybody. Take a diplomatic stance in everything - you are not aware of the gang-grudges, sneaks and complaint-boxes yet.
  4. Don't stare at anyone. Just don't.
  5. Don’t mess with your class-teacher even if she's the worst woman you've ever come across in your whole career. You guys will be great friends at the end of the year.
  6. Don’t mess with the kids even if you have dared to do the above. They’ll kill you before summer vacations!

  1. Try being up-to-date in your work even if you're a regular slacker, because first impressions really do count. This might be the right time to change ways too.
  2. Share your stuff with the other kids. Say nice things and listen to all they have to say - all the more better if these come naturally. It helps a lot in making new friends. Oh and if you're funny, then it’s a sure shot! Just don't try to be too funny, okay?
  3. It's important to maintain a good rapport with teachers and the Principal. Always greet them with a smile. Look neat. No hands in pockets. Courteousness. And things like that work well.
  4. Don’t wear your wristwatch the first day. That gives you a chance to strike up a conversation with your neighbour, asking them what time it is. If the person you asked is not your type, then ask the next person the same till you find a fun person.

These aren’t rules. Just have a regard for them -  you may as well break them and be yourself. Be your better self.

the WATCH trick is a gr8 idea....the other rule--if u forget a person's name ( the worst sin in human relations ), well if u forget it, just ask them for their full name, wriggling and giggling that you forgot her nick/pseudo tag!!

I concurr with johnny on idea on starting a conversation, if one is new to skool. A great article, I must say! I've been to a lot of schools since childhood, and had this been posted a little earlier(try 5 years ago),and that I'd stumbled upon it back then, it would have really helpd me in many ways!
