It is not everybody's cup of tea to trek and camp in the wild. Not that it needs years of experience but yes, it requires dedication and a willingness to understand the dos and don'ts.

“If I come to your house, yell, howl and dirty the place, how would you react? People often don't realise that when they go in to the wild, they are going to someone else's home,” says Suraj, co-founder of Eco Ventures, his tone rising with concern. “There are people who would throw a stone at an elephant or make noises at the wild animals just to attract their attention and make them pose for their cam. At Eco Ventures, we promise to teach you the tricks in clicking the animals’ pictures without disturbing them,” Suraj adds.

Eco Ventures is a Trivandrum-based tour company, started by two nature lovers -- Suraj Khan and Praveen Muraleedharan, which organises wildlife and photography tours, leisure trips, camps and treks, and adventure trips into the wild.

Ask him a basic tip on successful trekking, and Suraj would say: “Avoid flashy clothes and perfumes and say a strict no to digital and mobile cameras.”

Suraj Khan and Praveen Muraleedharan wanted to unveil the hidden beauty of the untamed and untouched places. So they decided to package Kerala in a whole different perspective, and that is how 'Eco Ventures' took shape.

Step into their world. Watch an animal plunge into a nearby lake. Spot rare birds one after the other and listen to their songs. Witness the beauty of nature and wildlife without letting them know that you are sneaking into their privacy.

From wildlife and photography tours to camping and trekking, they have all the options and packages you would want to have. The most interesting packages would be the Educational and Special Interest Tours, and Corporate team outs.

Trivandrum-based Eco Ventures doesn't encourage you to opt for AC rooms while having a glimpse at the wild. Tents and tree houses would provide the actual ambience, and with a cook accompanying the group, no one stays hungry or ends up eating leaves and berries in the wild.

“It was my first proper trekking experience, going to a thick forest. It was tough. Extreme weather, powerful wind and thick mist, I couldn’t even see the guy standing 5 feet next to me. But those three days were fun; we carried all our stuff from utensils to sleeping bags. The climb was tiring but once we reached the top all the patience paid up. It felt like heaven,” says Gautam Mohan, who accompanied the team on such a trekking expedition.

Eco Ventures has charted plans to conduct trekking and camping trips to Munnar, Thekadi, Wayanad, Ponmudi this year. “A stretch of Western Ghats that falls in Kerala has one of the most awesome biodiversity systems and has around 36 hotspots. One of the most beautiful places and a must-go is Parambikulam. It is very rich in wildlife and has beautiful tree houses,” says Suraj.

One of the best moments during his wildlife endeavours was capturing five tigers in a frame at the Periyar Tiger Reservoir.

Suraj, who quit his fancy job to pursue his dream and to nurture his photography skills, is on his quest to explore more hidden empires.
