Trivandrum: With stations coming up every 800 to 1500 meters, a total of 19 stops would dot the 22.2 kilometer stretch between Pallipuram and Thampanoor in the first phase of the monorail project. Stations would be located at Technocity Extension, Technocity, Pallipuram, Thamarakulam, Kaniyapuram, RVTI Junction, Kazhakootam, Karyavattom, Pangaparra Guru Mandiram, Pangaparra C H Memorial School, Sreekaryam, Pongumoodu, Ulloor, Kesavadasapuram, Pattom, Plamoodu, Palyaam, Statue and Thampanoor. The yard shed is mooted to come up at Pallipuram, the proposed site for the upcoming Technocity project.

With the detailed report awaited from the NATPAC officials to be submitted to the government on Wednesday, the Monorail system is expected to cater to the commuting needs of the city for the next thirty years. The second phase of the project would cover the distance from Thampanoor to Neyyatinkara, consisting of another 16 stops, bringing the total number of stops to 35. The elevated stations are to have foot over bridges and escalators and is targeted to become the developmental hub of the locality with the coming up of shopping centers and restaurants. The stations would also be points for the commencing of feeder services consisting of AC low floor buses to various parts in the city.

The Monorail project is expected to cost Rs. 130 crores for every kilometer. The minimum fare for a journey in Monorail is to cost less than ten rupees. A separate company on the lines of DMRC (Delhi Metro Rail Corporation) that will function for the speedy implementation of the project is on the cards.

The Monorail project, however, still requires clearance from the Railways to have it taken through the fly over at Thampanoor, on its way to Karamana. The project also sounds the death bell for the 'Pod Car' project connecting Vellayambalam to East Fort. Since the Palayam - East Fort stretch already comes under the Monorail project, importance would be given for the timely completion of the elevated monorail system which is much more urgent and needy for taking the city into its future.
