Trivandrum Gears Up For Another Nationwide Strike
A meeting convened by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) to be held tomorrow remains unchanged despite the harthal | By Yentha

Kowdiar, Trivandrum: Eight central trade unions of the country have called a nationwide strike, which starts midnight, and will go on for 24 hours. The INTUC, CITU, AITUC, UTUC and HMS are the main advocates of the strike.

Many prominent unions, especially those owing allegiance to the Left Democratic Front (LDF) have come out in unison with their support for the strike. With the CPI(M), its allies and even teachers’ organisation supporting the strike, normal life in the city is set to be hit badly.

The strike is in protest against some of the recent policies of the central government, especially, the alleged anti-employee stand of the government. The strike coordination committee also calls for curbing the recent price-rise. The CPI(M) state secretariat issued a statement protesting the central government’s mismanagement of the food market. The statement alleges that the center has not implemented the social security legislation despite passing it 20 months ago. With measures like tax cuts summing up to Rs. 5 lakh crore, the government’s insincerity in reviving the economy is evident, says the statement.

Organisers of the strike informed here that state government employees, including those in the service sector, shall participate in the strike. Telecom, Bank, and LIC employees have also been invited to take part in the strike. The strike coordination committee informed that the movement of private vehicles would not be affected.

Interestingly, a meeting convened by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) to be held tomorrow remains unchanged despite the harthal. Since the free movement of vehicles remains unrestricted, the officials explained that there is no harm in conducting the meeting. “This is a clear evidence of hypocrisy. Common people like us are affected by the strike while the ‘organisers’ of the harthal relax in AC rooms,” comments Rajendran, a bank employee.

At the end of the day, it is the common man who bears the brunt of these protests.
