Kazhakkoottam, Trivandrum: Technopark, home to more than 30,000 employees, remained unaffected by yesterday’s harthal. Most companies recorded normal attendance, and had a day that was no different from the others.

“All our employees attended work without fail on the harthal day,” said Nelvin Joseph, CEO, Artin Dynamics. “In fact, our attendance was rock-bottom in the past-week, and ironically, it peaked on the harthal day.”

Bhavesh S, A Business Process Analyst at UST Global, decided to work from home. “My company gives me the option to work from home. So I decided to do just that and not take a risk,” he said.

But the harthal did have an impact on his company. “A few meetings that were scheduled to be held on the day were postponed, since 10-15 per cent of the employees could not make it, as their pick-up buses did not ply. However, many reached office by 11, noticing that private vehicles were allowed to ply. The strike did have an impact, albeit minor,” he added.

The parking lots of Technopark were crowded as usual. During the lunch break, employees flocked around the food courts, which were crowded.  In fact, this reporter had a tough time parking his vehicle, and experienced a delay in getting his food delivered at the NILA food court.

“The day is as normal as ever,” said Padmanabhan, a security guard at the NILA building, Technopark. “People have come for work as if it were a normal day,” he said. “Usually, we follow a ‘convoy’ system during harthals--with buses plying in a line, one-by-one. Even that was not needed today. However, bus drivers have parked their vehicles within the Technopark campus. Usually, they wait outside the campus, and enter in the evening to pick up employees.”

The ‘Subway’ at the entrance of the Technopark campus had its shutters down, nevertheless.
