Kowdiar, Trivandrum: Apple has lifted curtains on its new family of iPod series of music players. Steve Jobs, the CEO of Apple Computers, revealed the new series of iPods at a keynote address on September 1st. Three flagship ‘iPods’ - iPod Shuffle, Nano and Touch, have been completely revamped in the new ‘generation’ (as Apple terms its products) of the music player that revolutionised digital music.

iPod Nano

The new iPod Shuffle looks similar to the 2G version of the music player in terms of shape and form factor. The previous version of iPod shuffle incorporated a voice-over feature (which helped users control music through voice commands), with buttons fixed on ear-buds, which created problems and triggered replacements. The new version of iPod combines the best of both worlds with buttons going back to the player’s body and voice commands still intact. The 2 GB version of iPod shuffle costs Rs 3,200.

iPod Touch

iPod Nano has been remodelled to resemble an iPod Shuffle. 46% smaller and 42% lighter, the new Nano now sports a touch-screen too. The Nano also has FM Radio, ‘Live Pause’ (a feature that helps users to ‘pause’ radio - while it records audio in the player’s memory). However, the new Nano will not have a camera, which the older version of Nano had. The 8 GB and 16 GB versions will be available for Rs. 10,700 and Rs. 12,700 respectively.

The biggest makeover goes to iPod Touch, despite retaining the same old size and form-factor. It sports a ‘retina display’, which offers high pixel intensity that individual pixels cannot be identified ensuring superior picture clarity. The touch-screen is 3.5” wide and offers a resolution of 960x640. iTouch also sports two cameras - a front camera (which takes pictures at 960x640 resolution and records HD video) and a front camera which is VGA - thus enabling video conferencing (or ‘FaceTime’ as apple calls it). However, Facetime works only between iPods and iPhones. The new iPod Touch is powered by an A4 processor, which helps with better performance. The music player will cost Rs. 15,400, Rs. 19,900 and Rs. 24,900 for the 8 GB, 16 GB and 64 GB versions respectively.
