Trivandrum: The nationwide strike announced by trade unions hit normal life in the city. It affected the normal functioning of schools, government departments and other commercial industries. The strike was total in the state, as buses and other public transport services kept off from the roads. However, emergency services like hospitality, newspaper, electricity, water supply and milk supply were not affected.

People from other states who have come to visit the city bore the brunt of the  strike. “Even before the announcement of the strike, we had planned our journey and we needed to come here in time, otherwise our contractors wouldn't allow us to work,” said a group of Bengali construction workers, who got stuck in the central railway station .

However, some alternative transport services were arranged by the police, to make sure people reach their destinations. A few auto rickshaw drivers were also present at the central railway station.

When approached, they said: “Please Sir, don't take photos or mention our names, because we are all part of the trade unions, and if they find us on tomorrow’s paper, they will fire us.”

On asked about not joining the strike, they told Yentha: “If we miss a day's salary, it would be very difficult to compensate the pending loans and other financial liabilities.” They also clarified that they were not levying any extra pennies from the travellers.

A long row of bikes were parked in front of the station, as people rushed to the station to pick up their their kith and kin and take them away from further trouble.
