Pappanamcode, Trivandrum: The world is undergoing a paradigm shift from a resource-based economy to a knowledge-based economy, said Dr. Ajith Prabhu, joint director of Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment, and Nodal officer for the Patent Information Centre.

He was giving the keynote address at the inaugural session of the lecture on ‘Dimensions of Intellectual Property Rights for the protection of Technological Inventions’, held at SCT College of Engineering on Tuesday.
“The leadership of the world will be in the hands of those who can innovate and create. It has already been recognised that monetary benefits encourage creativity. Hence the confidence in the intellectual property system will encourage the creativity and innovation of individuals,” said Dr. Prabhu.

Earlier, Dr. Kuncheria P Issac, Director of Technical Education, inaugurated the one-day seminar. He said: “Teachers and students should work towards the progress of the country. They need to go out to the industries, find out what they need and do research in their labs to find a solution. This is what is expected, especially from the students of engineering colleges. The future of India is dependent on its youth and their potential to innovate.”

In the first session of the seminar, Dr. Bismi Gopalakrishnan, lecturer, Department of Law, University of Kerala, dwelt on the “Fundamental Concepts of Intellectual Property Rights”. She explained the concepts of intellectual rights, trademarks, and patents to the audience.

Later, RS Praveen Raj, scientist from NIIST, Trivandrum, talked about ‘Patenting System in India and Patent Drafting’.
