Trivandrum: Since its start in 2003, Thanal’s Organic Bazaar has become a reliable outlet for organic produce in the city. It brings together the consumers and producers of organic and eco-friendly products to a common market, where one can not only buy or sell, but also discuss the various issues concerning both seller and buyer. Organic Bazaar’s founding principle is building faith and relationship between all those who are concerned about our environment, food and children.
Organic Bazaar believes in fair trade. It ensures that organic food is made available to ordinary consumers at affordable prices, even while the farmers get the recognition and price which is their due for the poison-free produce that they deliver. Thus it helps small, marginal and landless farmers to give up chemical and water intensive agricultural practices and deliver safer produce and in the process, improve their health and livelihood.
“Thanal acts as the facilitator for the event. The event is organized by Organic Farmers Producers and Consumers Society. We provide the floor space, technical support, and financial assistance including wages of the workers. Gradually, these duties are being transferred to the society so that it will soon function on its own,” said C Jayakumar, Director Thanal.
Vegetables, fruits, rice, cereals and pulses, grain flours, honey, jams, pickles and syrups, spices, coconut oil, jaggery, sweets and snacks, soaps and herbal cosmetics, supplies for organic farming, zero waste products can be bought from this Bazaar.
“The products that we serve are fresh products, usually grown locally. The major portion is from Balaramapuram, Kovalam area and some from Vilappil panchayat. We now follow a token system. We start the registration at 11:30 in the morning and tokens will be distributed at 1:20. At 1:30 in the afternoon we start delivery. We are very strict about the timings,” expressed Babychan, Programme coordinator.
Organic Bazaar promotes a way of farming which is about understanding
nature and establishing a production system that replenishes the
environment. It is fully accountable to the farmers and consumers.
Organic quality is ensured by an internal control system. Farmers get
the best price for their produce.
“We come here because we can
buy organic products with assurance. We believe and trust this bazaar.
Even though the price is a bit high, we don’t mind it, because of the
quality. But the token system is a bit inconvenient at times,” said
Vijayakumari, a regular customer of the Bazaar.
The idea of an
organic bazaar in Trivandrum was tested in November 2003, based on a
system devised by the Institute for Integrated Rural Development,
Aurangabad. Based on the encouraging response to the pilot initiative
the organic bazaar concept developed into a monthly market and later on
into a weekly market.
Organic Bazaar is organised every
Wednesdays and Saturdays, but second Saturdays witness the most rush and
also the most number of products.
