Poojappura, Trivandrum:  Days after Onam, people continue to celebrate the biggest festival of the state. The Magic Academy in Trivandrum, led by noted magician Muthukad Gopinath, has planned for a big event on September 11, to commemorate the benevolent Asura King Mahabali.

Called ‘Onam Magic Fest’, the one-day event to be held at the Academy, will have around 50 magicians coming, with magic classes and competitions for participants. “Whatever happens in the society, magicians should have a role to play in it. Whether it is a social problem or a festival, they have to respond,” said KP Sivakumar, Public Relations, Magic Academy on behalf of Muthukad Gopinath, who will not be present for the event, on account of a London tour.

General Secretary of the Purogamana Kala Sahithya Sangham, Prof. VN Murali will inaugurate the event at 9:30am.  Honorary Director of the Academy, Chandrasenan Mithirmala will preside over.

Classes include body loading techniques by Hyderabad’s acclaimed magician, Ch. Shyam, and upper levels of modern close-up magic by R Raja Moorthy, director and faculty chief of the Academy.

To give the complete essence of the festival, a traditional ‘Ona Sadhya’ (Onam feast) will be served on plantain leaves.

There will also be a ‘Maveli Magic Competition’ for seniors and juniors at 1:30pm in which magicians in the guise of Mahabali will be competing to relive the glorious past through magical demonstrations. Maveli Magic will allow team presentations by magicians. Prize winners will be announced during the valedictory function at 5:30pm, with a performance by the first and second prize winners.
