Nobel Committee Member Anders Liljas Visits University

Trivandrum: The former member of the Nobel prize committee Prof. Anders Liljas is visiting the University of Kerala, Kariyavattom. He is expected to be here on Jan 20-21, 24-25.

Today, Liljas was present for a one-on-one interaction with faculty members, researchers and the press, at the university.

Anders Liljas obtained his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Uppsala, Sweden in 1971 where he became docent (Associate Professor) in Molecular Biology. From 1988 - 2006, he was full professor of Molecular Biophysics at Lund University, Sweden. From 1993 – 2003, he was Dean and Deputy Dean responsible for the Chemistry Section of the Natural Science Faculty, Lund University. He has been Director of the Lund Center for Bio-molecular Structure and Dynamics & Coordinator for Structural Biology within the SWEGENE consortium. He is a member of The Royal Academy of Sciences, Stockholm.
Liljas was a member of the Nobel Committee for twelve years. He has been active and held posts at the local synchrotron, the MAX-laboratory. His scientific interests include protein and nucleic acid structure, in particular, molecules involved in protein synthesis, enzymes and macromolecular crystallography at synchrotron.

Liljas will talk on “The development of structural biology seen through its Nobel Prizes", followed by presentations by research scholars and cultural evening at Kowdiar palace.

On Jan-24, he will be visiting the science and technology museum, followed by a talk on “Do     you need to see to understand?” On Jan-25, he will attend discussions with researchers and the press. He will also be visiting the manuscript library.
