Sreekariyam, Trivandrum: Loyola College Trivandrum, has been ranked fifth among all the best Social Sciences colleges in India by the Outlook Magazine. The ranking is as per a survey published by the magazine in one of its June 2010 editions.

Loyola College thus becomes the only one among the 32 Social Sciences colleges in Kerala to be featured in the elite list.

Sonny Jose, Senior Lecturer at the college, spoke to Yentha. He said: “The recognition is something incredible. It has placed us among the best in India which proves that we have the needed infrastructure and faculty. Among the numerous Social Sciences colleges in Kerala, no other college has made it to the top ranks.”

The college offers MA in Personal Management, MA in Sociology and an MSW (Masters in Social Work) course.

MSW is a post graduate degree which covers a wide range of subjects like entrepreneurship, project management, hospital administration, community development etc. “It is about teaching people to live, empowering individuals or groups to lead a better life,” says a faculty at the college.

In association with UGC, Loyola College is doing projects on ‘Women in Tourism’, ‘Information Society and Development’ etc. However, a much noted contribution by the college is the woman oriented Kudumbashree project. The blueprint of Kudumbashree was conceived in Loyola. “The thought on ‘how to empower a community’ was the one which led to Kudumbashree. Basically we train our students to handle people. It is a people profession”, adds Sonny Jose.

The college fares well in all aspects of quality measurement. It has well trained staff with all except two of the faculty members having a doctorate degree. The college boasts of a Wi-Fi campus. The research works at the college concentrate on themes such as ‘community empowerment’, ‘local self government activities’, and ‘management research’.

Loyola College, started in 1963 and situated at Sreekariyam is affiliated to the University of Kerala. It is a recognized research centre of the University. Admissions to the college are open to all graduates. The admission test is followed by a group discussion and an interview before the final selection.
