| Kowdiar, Trivandrum: “A smile is a curve that sets everything straight,” says Phyllis Diller, the famous American standup comedian and actor. It is said that there are more than 60 facial muscles and it takes only about 26 of them to smile. Hundreds of proverbs and quotes have been made through the ages that tell you the importance and benefits of a smile. A smile can win hearts; a smile can mend a broken heart… What more? It can also win you awards! The Trivandrum Chiri Club has decided to honour Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan with an award for being the ‘smiling minister’. “When we got together for last month’s executive meeting we decided to award a public figure who gets through his daily life with a smile even while facing adversities. Health minister PK Sreemathi, Minister of Law and Sports M Vijayakumar and Vigilance and Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan were our choices. We chose to award a politician because they grab much media attention and appear on our TV screens every other day; also because they go through a lot of pressurising situations which should have them lose their cool at the drop of a hat. We finally decided to award Kodiyeri because the majority voted for him,” says Dr. Suresh Kumar, President, Trivandrum Chiri Club. He adds: “We do not wish to make this a regular procedure. As such we have never followed any such oraganisational pattern for our club. Even the membership is open to all and it is free. During our last meeting, one of our members came up with this suggestion of honouring a public figure. The decision was instantaneous.” Previously, the club had honoured two prominent figures who brought some laughs to every household in Kerala: Tomz, who writes the popular cartoon series ‘Bobanum Mollyum’ and Jagathy Sreekumar, one of the most favourite comedians of Malayalam Cinema. The Chiri Club meets on the first Sunday of every month at the IMA Hall near General Hospital. Started in August 2009 by a group of people from different walks of life, who felt that people do not spend a lot of time to exchange a few jokes and have some laughs these days, the club now has over 300 members who meet every month to share a joke or two.
