Trivandrum: Kerala State Administrative Tribunal (KAT) which takes care of service related litigation of state government employees will be set up in Trivandrum on September 2. The Chairman of the newly formed KAT, Justice K Balakrishnan, will assume charge on September 3. The KAT, the first of its kind in the state, will operate from the old collectorate building in the city.

Over fifty percentage of the cases in the State High Court are related to service matters of state government. Presently, more than one lakh service related cases are pending in high court,  and more than 10,000 new petitions are filed every year. Once the new KAT is set up, all these cases would be handed over to it.

Many lawyers feel that the new KAT will speed up the judicial system as the High Court will be free to attend to other cases once the service related ones are taken care by KAT.

"So far as the state government and its employees are concerned the setting up of the Kerala State Administrative Tribunal is a significant step," says Adv. Muraleedharan Nair.
