Asian countries are no more financially behind, says E. Timor president | By Yentha

| Statue, Trivandrum: India and China should lead the way for Asian countries to come together in fighting climate change and working towards constant development, said East Timor president Jose Ramos-Horta at a press conference here today. Other Asian countries too should join this alliance, he said. There was a time when Asian countries were financially behind. But the situation has changed now. India and China have a large amount of foreign money and they are much ahead in the field of science and technology, he added. Ramos-Horta said that the Western countries would join the Asian countries in their fight against poverty, illiteracy and climate change. “We need a practical way to bridge all kinds of differences,” he said. He felt that there was no good in Western countries blaming each other for the recent global recession. No one knew the effects of the industrial revolution. “One must remember that we are still enjoying the good side of the revolution. There are two sides to everything,” he added. The president said that East Timor was one of the few countries which were not affected by the global economic crisis. “Even then, we had an economic growth of 12.5% and do not owe a single cent to another country.” East Timor was able to generate significant revenue from Timor sea oil and gas production. The country has a deal with Australia to explore the oil and natural gas reserves under the Timor sea. There are some disagreements in the new deals with Australia but the country hopes to settle the issues amicably. |

Ramos-Horta added that Indonesia, the country from which East Timor won independence, was in full support of its decision to become a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
