| Trivandrum: A help desk exclusively for schoolgirls is set to be launched by the Department of Education on Gandhi Jayanthi. The children will get access to trained counsellors. The help desk will have a 24-hour toll-free number. Titled ‘Thangu’, the help desk project is pioneered and implemented by the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) in association with the Mahila Samakhya Society. The Department for Education has given nod for the project, which shall cover students from Standard V to Standard VIII. A ten-day online and offline training for teachers, regarding strength-based pedagogy and counselling techniques, will be conducted. In the first phase of the programme schools with 200 girls or more will be provided with the service. Telephone directories with contact numbers of 15 people, including counsellors, teachers, psychiatrists, doctors and officers, will be distributed among the students. Students may call the people in the list and seek assistance regarding any mental or physical trauma within the school atmosphere at any point in time. Confidentiality will be ensured in such matters. |
