Statue, Trivandrum: Imagine:

-- The view of the Secretariat through a small glass container.
-- Three women -- an old Sari-clad Tamilian, a smiling young policewoman, and a foreign tourist, fresh from a bath -- caught in one frame.
-- Among all the rotten and disgusting stuff in a garbage truck are two little children, sleeping comfortably, with their parents pulling the truck.

These are but three of the photographs in the Capital Lens View Portfolio 2010 photography expo held at the Press Club here, by the photo journalists of Trivandrum, and the Trivandrum Press Club.

Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan inaugurated the exhibition on Thursday, after which he was presented a photograph of his, by the photo journalists. Ports Minister V Surendran Pillai also visited the expo.

There are no prizes, this is no competition. As many as 80 photos, two from each of the 40 participating photo journalists, have been put up for the three-day expo that ends tomorrow. There is a certain unity with photos of journalists working for the various media in the city coming together at one place.

And hats off to our journos who turn creative at the spur of a moment. Who would think of taking a quick snap of a pigeon on the shoulder of a photographer trying to take a snap of ministers, except another photographer? Who could be so perfect with his timing, as a photographer who catches on his camera the picture of a little child up in the air during a street circus, or an auto driver sticking to his steering as his vehicle is falling down? Not to forget about the immediate ideas that form on their heads -- so you see the picture of a football player up in the air with the football taking the place of his head, that one might mistake it is on top of his body.

One may think that walking around with a camera hung around the neck, clicking a couple of snaps and going away is a really easy job to do. One thinks wrong. The writers get time to frame their words, arrange their punctuations. All the photographers get is an instant, a moment to use all their creativity, timing and skill. Bravo photo journalists!
