Kowdiar, Trivandrum: Air India has decided to cancel several express flights from Kerala due to cabin crew shortage. This has forced the AI to cancel about three flights a day for about a month. Most of the cancelled flights are to the Gulf sector.

Air India Express had announced cancellation of daily flights to Sharjah from the Trivandrum, Kochi and Kozhikode airports from September 20 and three flights per week to Muscat from September 13. The Thiruvananthapuram-Dubai and Thiruvananthapuram-Abu Dhabi daily flights stand cancelled from September 20.

Meanwhile, a DYFI protest march to the AI office in Kozhikode turned violent and led to vandalising the office on Monday. Protest marches taken out to the Trivandrum and Cochin offices of Air India were stopped by the police.

Air India officials say that the cancellations will be made effective only after the first two weeks of September, which is the peak traffic time for most Malayalis owing to the re-opening of schools in the Gulf. Nonetheless, the cancellations will severely affect Non Resident Keralites (NORKs). Riya Travels, a leading Travel Agency in Trivandrum, says that the AI Express cancellations will affect close to 40,000 people.

“Today's Muscat flight was cancelled though the AI had announced cancellation of flights after the peak traffic period,” said a representative of Riya Travels.

The most affected will be the travellers to Muscat followed by those to Sharjah and Abu Dhabi. Although AI has announced full refund or change of flights for the tickets booked in the cancelled flights, it will not be useful for many.

"This is the time of highest traffic to the Gulf. The people rescheduled to other flights will be able to leave only after September 20. Else they will have to travel by other airlines whose fares are more than double of what AI charges," said the representative of Riya travels.

In short, it is a bad time to be a non-resident Keralite.
