Trivandrum: Aadhaar is a 12-digit number issued to all residents by  the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). The enrolment for this is being done through Akshaya, IT@School, Keltron, Post Offices and various banks in Kerala.

Akshaya State Project Officer Rejitha says, “Through Akshaya more than 3 lakh people have been given the identification number. We have 2 enrolling centres in each Panchayat and 500 UID stations have been opened initially.”

The Government of India introduced UIDAI in 2009. This facility provides a universal way of uniquely identifying Indian residents, and cannot be duplicated, since it is linked to individual biometrics. This enables the identification of fake and ghost identities, which result in leakages today.Elimination of duplicate and fake identities through Aadhaar-based identification will also enable the government to expand benefits to eligible residents.

Rejitha continues, “Two types of enrolment is being carried out in Akshaya. One is document based and the other is introduced based. In document based, the enroller has to provide identification proof and proof of address to register in Aadhar. But in introduced based, documents are not mandatory. One can be introduced by members of local government bodies  such as ward members, local leaders etc.”
